My name is Dr. Maria Lange, and I'm one of the research members on the IIH Advanced Trial. Today, in this video, I'll be showing you how to safely inject Mounjaro. Mounjaro is a medication that helps with weight management. It is a prescription medication and the active substance is called tirzepatide. It works by mimicking two hormones, GLP1 and GIP. These hormones help regulate your appetite by slowing down digestion, reducing cravings, and giving you a sense of fullness. The medication comes in the form of a multi-dose pen, which you inject once a week under the skin. Each pen has four doses and is therefore designed to last you for one month. Each pen is dose specific, so if your dose changes, so does your pen. Now let me show you the pen and how to use it. The pen will come in a box along with needles, alcohol wipes, and a sharps bin. You should dispose of your needles in here afterwards. Unused pens should be stored in the fridge, but once you start using it, it can be stored at room temperature up until 30 degrees celsius and out of direct sunlight. Before you start, please wash your hands with soap and warm water and prepare a clean surface. Please be aware that today I am using a demo pen. Your pen will look slightly different. Inspect the pen by checking the name of the medication and the expiry date. Over here, you'll have a dose - check this is the same dose you've been prescribed. Pull the pen cap straight off and keep it to one side. Your pen will have a clear window here. The liquid should appear colorless or slightly yellow. Make sure the medication is not frozen or cloudy. If it is, please do not use the pen. Wipe the inner seal with an alcohol wipe. Pull off the paper tab from the needle and detach it to the pen by pushing the capped pen needle straight onto the pen and twist until it is tight. Every time you inject, you will need to use a new pen needle. This is to prevent infections or blocked needles. Before you use the pen, you need to prime it. To do this, remove the outer shield, followed by the inner shield. The dose selector is at the other end of the pen. Turn the dose selector until you hear two clicks, and you see the extended line in the dose window. This is the prime position. With the needle pointing upwards tap the cartridge holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top. Release some medicine into the air by pressing the dose selector until it stops. Keep it pressed down while you count to five. The zero icon will be shown in the dose window. Priming removes air from the needle and makes sure that your pen is working properly. Your pen has been primed if a small amount of medication comes out from the top of the needle There is always slightly more medication in your pen to allow you to prime it before each injection. You can inject into the abdomen, upper thigh, or arm. Clean the chosen area with an alcohol wipe and let it dry. Remember to change your injection sites each week to avoid soreness or bruising. You are now ready to administer the injection. Twist the dose selector until it stops, and the one icon is shown in the dose window. This will administer the dose shown on your pen label. Pinch the area of skin gently and insert the needle at a 90 degree angle. Press and hold down the dose selector until it stops and count to five while holding down the dose selector. The zero icon should be visible in the window before removing the needle from the skin. Pull the needle out of the skin. Confirm the zero icon is in the dose window. If you do not see the zero in the icon window, you have not completely administered the dose. Just insert the needle back into the skin and finish the injection by pressing down. Put the outer needle shield back on the needle and unscrew it from the pen. Dispose of the needle in the sharps bin container. Recap your pen and stored in a dry place away from sunlight. Now, just a final few points to remember. Please do not share your pen with anybody else. If you have children in the house, please make sure that you keep the medication out of their reach. Also remember that you can inject majaro at any time of day with or without meals, but please remember to inject it at the same day every single week. Thank you for watching.
